How to suspect a broken AC Compressor?

Home comfort heating and cooling appliances provide great relief by creating a comfortable indoor environment that saves us from the harsh temperatures. Whether it is extremely cold outside or blazing hot, as long as you've an HVAC system operating and the right HVAC practices followed, nothing is going to affect your indoor activities as such. But the same comfort providing appliances can create great unease when an issue occurs and they either partially or completely stop working. For the Summers, what is a worse nightmare than to have an AC problem that too on the hottest Summer days when even the technicians are not easily available? We want homeowners to learn the HVAC basics, ways of suspecting the HVAC problems in time and simple DIY tips to treat their appliances on their own so as to have a quick and free repair.

Let's talk about broken AC Compressor. It has been observed that many Toronto homeowners continue to use their Air Conditioners with broken compressors knowing not that the compressor is broken. There are simple ways a broken AC compressor can be suspected in time.

Broken Compressor

- Insufficient Cool Air

Why do you have your Air Conditioner for? For cooling, certainly! And you after using your unit for a few weeks begin to have an idea what level of cooling the AC unit provides. As soon as a lack of cool air is felt, know that something's wrong with the AC system and most probably with the compressor unit. There is one thing that needs to be understood in this regard. Insufficient cooling and insufficient air flow are two different things. While the lack of cooling means something's wrong with your compressor, the lack of air flow means that your AC blower is malfunctioning, not the compressor.

- The Snake like Sounds?

Ever found a snake in your Toronto home? Okay, let's say you've never seen a real snake ever, you sure still know what kind of sound does it make. It makes hissing sounds. If the same kind of hissing is heard from the compressor unit, it indicates the system is overly burdened and this is alarming. However, keep this point in mind that the hissing sound coming from other parts of the HVAC system, particularly the ducts, indicate air leaks but the same sound coming from the compressor indicate a totally different thing; a broken or malfunctioning Compressor.

-  Too much noise

When a Central Air Conditioner is turned on, it makes some noise. Who likes being woken up from rest man? But this whining should not last for too long and should not be coming from the compressor motor once the unit begins to operate. An unusually loud noise coming from the compressor motor indicates that either the motor is working harder than usual or there's a problem developing in the air compressor.

I've found out that my compressor has these issues, what to do?

The first and foremost thing you should do if any of the above-mentioned air compressor problems are suspected is to look for a reliable Air Conditioner technician and call him to have a professional diagnosis of the system so as to suggest what to do. And then, do as directed since professionals are professionals. They know HVAC appliances better than the commoners.
Happy HVAC learning!
